遠い遠いむかし、おおきな美しき生ける石は、
七色の輝きにて闇をはらい、世界を生命でみたし、
偉大なる神々を生んだ。
光に包まれた幸福な時代が続き、
やがて神々は眠りについた。
世界の名はヴァナ・ディール。
ヴァナ・ディール天品暦８６３年・・・・・・
世界は戦乱の渦に巻き込まれていた。
闇の王に率いられた獣人の軍隊に対抗し、
人類は４国からなる連合軍を結成。
即ち、サンドリア王国、バストゥーク共和国、
ウィンダス連邦、ジュノ大公国。
両者は各地で、熾烈な戦いを繰り広げていた。
It all began with a stone, or so the legend says.
In ages past, a sentient jewel, enormous and beautiful, banished the darkness.
Its many-colored light filled the world with life,
And brought forth mighty gods.
Bathed in that light, the world entered an age of bliss,
Until after a time, the gods fell into slumber.
That world was called, Vana'diel.
In the 863rd year of the Crystal Era......
Vana'diel was in the midst of a great war.
Faced with invasion of the Shadow Lord and his hordes beastmen,
The leaders of the enlightened peoples united their forces in desperate alliance.
They were, the Kingdom of San D'oria, the Republic of Bastok,
the Federation of Windurst, the Grand Duchy of Juno.
Together they struggled for survival, in battle after battle, as chaos engulfed the land.

Facts
* Originally this game was going to be
multi-console, specifically for the Xbox and GameCube, which were all planned to
be released after the PlayStation 2 and Personal Computer versions.
* The Xbox version of Final Fantasy XI Online was cancelled due to the closed nature of Microsoft's Xbox Live service,
which lead to the production of the Xbox 360 version.
* A rumor was floating around that Sega and Square were working together to
release an arcade version, which was going to be the same as the PlayStation 2
version, requiring a memory card for data storage.
* Hironobu Sakaguchi had hoped for a Macintosh version, but it was never
created.
* Originally Square planned on releasing the Personal Computer and PlayStation 2
versions simultaneously in Japan and the United States.
